No-one wishes to open their dishwasher and discover it hasn’t drained correctly but, try not to lose it just yet. You may manage deal with the problem without having to call a plumber or buy a new dishwasher.
Standing water in your machine can have any number of of causes a number of which can be simple to solve. So, in advance of calling a dishwasher repair service try this list of probable components you can troubleshoot on your own. Some of which are not even related to the machine itself.
It is possible that there is nothing stopping your machine from emptying. Instead, the cycle may have been stopped mid-way.
The program might have been stopped mid-way for multiple of reasons. Children pushing controls, inadvertently leaning against the control panel, a power cut or opening the dishwasher mid-program might all interrupt the program and mean your dishwasher doesn’t empty.
If you suspect this may be the circumstance, or you just want to be sure it’s not the issue run the machine again on a quick cycle.
A proportion dishwashers may have a drain function so it’s worth checking your instruction manual or doing a quick internet search to find out.
If you have a disposal check this before you move on as an obstructed waste disposal will block your machine from emptying. Turn on the waste disposal using lots of water to make sure there are no blockages.
If you do uncover a blockage drain unclogger or a natural alternative could be employed to clear the obstruction and so this may resolve the problem.
If you sink is emptying inefficiently this might indicate a plumbing issue rather than a problem with your machine.
If the kitchen sink is draining inefficiently you can try putting a little bicarbonate of soda and white vinegar down the plughole, letting it sit for a while and then rinsing it through with hot water.
A plunger might also be utilized to attempt to remove the obstruction.
This may be sufficient to allow the machine to work again so start a short program to check. If this hasn’t worked you may manually get rid of the standing water using a cup and also a towel and check the next few possible issues.

The next place to examine is the waste pipe. Stuck food, a kink in the hose or a crushed hose can all prevent your machine from draining.

Have a look at the pipe in the first instance to discover if it has been crushed or kinked. You can manually check the drain valve to ensure it hasn’t seized. The drain valve will usually be found at the base of the dishwasher on the valve bracket. Consult your owners manual if you’re not sure.
Pressing down on the valve or wiggling it a bit will likely be sufficient to find out if it’s seized. If you can see any debris stopping it from moving carefully extract this. If you can’t, this may be a good time to call a repair person unless you are happy in purchasing and repairing the part yourself.
Your appliance pump uses impellers that could become obstructed by pieces of china or other debris. Check your pump isn’t blocked by taking off the cover and making sure the impellers can be easily rotated.
If the dishwasher doesn’t sound right your pump or motor might be broken and need replacing.
If you have been through the above list and the problem persists, or you have reason to believe the pump, pump valve or motor are broken, it might be a good time to call for help.
At least having attempted to troubleshoot you have prevented having to pay a big call-out fee for a blocked hose.
